Travel with the northernmost railway in the world

In 2010, the 572 km long Arctic Yamal Railway has opened, starting at the station Obskaya - Arctic Circle Railway. This exclusive rail journey through the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Republic is in comfortable cars of the 2nd class from the station Obskaya to Karskaya km572 and stop station Bovanenkovo 70.th latitude. From Moscow to Obskaya / Labytnangi you travel by train "Polyanaya Strela" or similar train.

The Obskaya–Bovanenkovo Line is a 525-kilometers (326 miles) long railway line in northern Russia, a railway line to the Bovanenkovo gas field in the Yamal Peninsula. This railway is built for transportation goods, workers and locals of the Yamal peninsula, which is also the home of the world largest area of reindeer husbandry.

A total of 1300 workers have been involved in this project, and the world's longest bridge located beyond the Arctic Circle has been commissioned in Yamal. The unique 3,900 metre long structure was built by Gazprom in 349 days' time, it weighs over 30 thousand tons. In order to preserve the spawning area of valuable fish the bridge was erected upon high bearing piles which have been spud down 40 metres deep into the permafrost.

Yamal is a remote, wind-blasted place of permafrost, rivers and dwarf shrubs, which has been home to the reindeer-herding Nenets people for over a thousand years (the word Yamal in their language means "the end (of the world)".

Today more than 10.000 Nenets herd 300.000 domestic reindeer on the pastures of the Arctic tundra. These Nomads of the Siberian arctic depend heavily on their reindeer herds, using them for food, clothing, tools, transportation, and more as they migrate more than a thousand kilometers across the tundra every year.
